SEA TURTLE NESTS
What and Why: The Hawaiian green sea turtle is a beloved and threatened species native to Hawai‘i. When a sea turtle crawls ashore and does not lay eggs, scientists call this a non-nesting or “false crawl.” Our goal with the dogs is to have them detect true nests, or in other words, discriminate between true nests and false crawls, so that the true nests may be protected appropriately. MORE INFO ON THE PROJECT WILL BE SHARED SOON.
Target Species: Hawaiian green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) or honu, in Hawaiian
Where: O‘ahu for initial project
